Governors of Northern Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening regional security, calling for sustained collaboration and renewed urgency in tackling emerging threats across the region.
Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, made the call on Monday in Abuja at the Forum’s meeting, noting that while security conditions have improved since December 2025, more decisive action is required.
He said the relative progress recorded was the result of joint efforts by state governments and support from the Federal Government, stressing that “there is absolutely no room for complacency.”
The governors reiterated their position on the establishment of state police, describing it as a critical solution to Nigeria’s complex security challenges.
Yahaya commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for backing constitutional reforms aimed at enabling state policing. According to him, localized and intelligence-driven security responses remain key to addressing insecurity in the North.
The Forum also highlighted the need to address root causes of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, and illiteracy, with particular concern over the rising number of out-of-school children.
As the rainy season approaches, the governors pledged to work with stakeholders to prevent farmer-herder clashes, supporting federal livestock transformation initiatives as part of long-term solutions. NNL.
