Chijioke Edoga, the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 guber election in Enugu, in an interview last few days ago, coupled with prolonged misrepresentation of facts on various WhatsApp groups, provoked the necessity of this piece.

In its editorial of 2nd August, 2024, the BusinessDay newspaper, characteristically, launched another scurrilous and baseless attack on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd). In the editorial entitled: “NNPCL: Liability or Asset to Nigerians?”, the newspaper set out to paint the picture of NNPC Ltd that is a liability to Nigeria instead of an asset that it should be. It chronicled a litany of issues which in its estimation have made the company to lose its place as an asset to the nation. As to be expected, all the issues it raised were either outright lies or unfair misrepresentation of facts. Let’s take a look at them one by one.

Oedipus Rex, that Greek mythology which has been popularised by Sophocles and Nigeria's Ola Rotimi, presents to us a king who has demonstrated abundantly that a ruler cannot command everything. In that play, we are dealing with a contrast between the supreme will of the gods and the vain attempts of mankind to escape the evil that threatens them. Destined by the gods to kill his father and marry his mother, all of Oedipus'efforts to avoid that prophecy only reveal his own impotence as a human being. But most importantly, the lesson we learn from the tragedy is that the leader is not all-knowing. Even as king or president, your knowledge is limited and incomplete, so you should listen. Listen to the people.
