The authorities of the Department of State Services (DSS) have advised against the reportage of sensational news in the Nigerian media, pointing out that this development is aggravating tension in some parts of the country and also encouraging the activities of terrorists and bandits.

The DSS issued the advice in a statement on Friday evening October 29, 2021, by its Spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunnanya.

According to the Security Service, it deplores the manner in which some sections of the media have continued to sensationalize news relating to some of the security challenges in parts of the country.

The DSS said it has observed that some media handlers give unnecessary attention and coverage to the activities of bandits, terrorists, and secessionists, adding that such act is "condemnable given that these elements thrive on undeserved publicity which they enjoy from media patronage".

Amidst heightened insecurity in the South East and the upcoming Anambra State Governorship election, however, the DSS advised the media to apply restraint and avoid sensationalizing news.

The Security Service said it "believes that this dimension of reportage holds negative consequences for public order and peaceful coexistence".

Dr Afunnanya however assured that the DSS will, however, continue to "collaborate with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure not only a hitch-free electoral exercise but that a conducive environment necessary for citizens to pursue their legitimate businesses in and outside the State is provided".
