Barely a few hours to the commencement of its proposed strike action, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have finally suspended the much publicized indefinite nationwide strike and mass protests.

The decision to shelve the strike was reached after a consensus with the Federal Government early this morning at a meeting between by both sides. Their meeting lasted far into early Monday morning at 2am.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who led the government side in the negotiation, had agreed to suspend the electricity tariff for two weeks while a committee comprising labour and government representatives will advise further.

Nigerian Newsleader Newspaper was told by a dependable source at the meeting, that labour has accepted the deregulation option of the downstream petroleum sector on the grounds that the refineries should be made to commence operation in other to push down the pump price of the Petroleum Products.

There are strong indications that the planned strike action may still paralyse activities till much later in the day this Monday.

“People have been made to believe that the strike will start this morning, so most of them have already attuned their mind to that. There is no way the effect will not last till noon. But people will still be at work today all the same,” the source said. NNL.
