The Chief of Field Office, UNICEF, Sokoto office, Ranganai Matema, has decried the delay in domestication of Child Protection Law in Sokoto State, saying it is creating avenues for more violations and abuse of children in the State.

"The delay in the domestication of Child Protection Law in Sokoto creates avenues for the violation and abuse of children. We will implore a speedy domestication of the law as this is the legal framework to ensuring the protection of children in Sokoto State", he said.

Ranganai who stressed that about 42 percent of the Nigeria's population are children, with a huge number of them between the ages of 6 to 14 not going to schools, added that that, "6 out of Nigerian children have suffered some form of violence with girls being predominantly affected by sexual violence. (One in four girls).

He said "many children leave school for different purposes and children's rights are often violated in various ways"

Ranganai in her goodwill message during the 2021 children day celebration tagged, "Effect of Covid 19 Pendamic on the total wellbeing of the Child: The Way forward" urged policy makers in Sokoto to support the implementation of policies and recommendations that will promote the best interest of children.

The fun packed programme which featured debates and others, was organized by the Sokoto State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB) in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) with support from UNICEF.

The event with it's theme, "Unite to Reverse the Impact of Covid 19 Pandemic On Children" had in attendance, dignitaries from the State Ministry of Education, Health, NOA, UNICEF, other CSOs as well as the traditional leaders. NNL.
