The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) leadership has announced an indefinite national strike action begining from mid night on Sunday, June 2nd, 2024.
The organised labour declared the industrial action on Friday, May 31, 2024, at the end of their joint emergency meeting in Abuja.
An ultimatum was formally issued to the federal government by the Labour Unions during the last May Day celebration to ensure that the discussion on a new national minimum wage based on the prevailing price anarchy in the country was concluded by Friday, May 31.
TUC President, Festus Osifo, said on Friday shortly after the emergency conclave of Labour that the strike had become necessary as the government refused to increase the N60,000 wage it offered on Friday during the meeting of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.
The TUC boss also said that the strike was necessary due to the refusal of government to reverse the hike in electricity tariff.
Osifo said: “We are hereby declaring the commencement of a nationwide industrial action, effective from Sunday midnight June 2 , 2024, and this strike shall be indefinite,” he said.We are united on this and we believe that this is the way forward". NNL.
