* Empowers Wives of Deceased Officers, Holds Health Other Educational Lectures

The Enugu State Chapter of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) celebrated the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD) in grand style with the distribution of bags of rice, tubers of yam, and other food items to wives of deceased police officers.
POWA also organised lectures to educate police officers’ wives on women’s health and the gains of giving.
Declaring the celebration open at the Enugu State Police Command Headquarters, GRA, Enugu, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, congratulated police officers’ wives and women generally on the occasion.
Speaking through the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID, DCP Hope Okereke Isiani, the Commissioner described this year’s theme, “Gift to Gain,” as timely and commendable, noting that acts of giving foster unity, compassion, and social support within the policing family and the wider society.
In her address, the Command’s POWA Chairperson and wife of the Commissioner of Police, represented by the Acting Chairperson, Mrs. Sarah George Okwor, welcomed participants and assured police officers’ wives of continued support in strengthening their families and extending assistance to the needy among them.
She also appreciated the National President of POWA, Mrs. Oluwafunmilola Mutiat Disu, for her support and for making the nationwide IWD celebration worthwhile.
As part of the programme, participants received medical checkups and lecture on the prevention of cervical cancer and stress management by Command’s Medical Services. Similarly, Barr. Sylvia Abanah, Chairperson of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria, Enugu State Branch and former Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in the State, also delivered a lecture on the IWD theme, “Gift to Gain.”
During the event, over one hundred wives of deceased police officers received food items including bags of rice, tubers of yam, cartons of noodles, onions, and other essentials. The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Enugu State Police Command and the leadership of POWA at the state and national levels for the gesture and continued support.
The event was attended by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, ACP Leticia Onyechere Onwuchekwa; the Officer in charge of Gender and Anti-Human Trafficking Section of the State CID; the State POWA Liaison Officer, SP Chinelo Ezekwe; executives and members of POWA, the Police Wives Association (PWA), and the Late Police Officers’ Wives Association (LAPOWA).
