The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that hand washing can save up to 1.3 % of childbirth lives caused by malaria, phnemomia and diarrhea in the country.

The Health Officer, UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, gave the breakdown while presenting his paper at a 2-days media dialogue on Thursday in Gombe state, urged the journalists and government to do more of enlightenment through promoting and preventive methods.

He noted that hand washing alone if promoted effectively can reduce the rate of childbirth diseases to zero level and this can only be achieved by the full support of the Government and community health worker's at the various communities.

According to him, majority of children die during the period of delivery as a result of some infectious diseases and lapses by professional personnel or services at the facilities.

He further urged the government and the journalists to make more health education programmes with a view to enlighten and educating the citizens especially at rural communities about the importance of regular hand washing to achieve the zero percentage by the UNICEF.

The two days training was organised to mark the 2024 international women's day celebrations for journalists from five states including Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa and Platuea ststes respectively, with view to equipping them with necessary knowledge on how to write stories on women health related issues.
