The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the operations of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) officials in Bauchi State.

In a statement on Monday, January 6, 2025, the union expressed its displeasure over JED's unnecessary disconnections, particularly for customers using prepaid meters, in an apparent bid to force them onto estimated billing.

The NUJ observed that the current system of estimated billing has a significant flaw, as customers are often forced to pay for services not rendered, including periods of darkness.

Furthermore, some JED officials have been accused of deliberately frustrating and embarrassing customers, even those with prepaid meters, to benefit personally from estimated billing.

In light of these issues, the Bauchi State Council of NUJ has advised the state government, ministries, and agencies to explore alternative power supply options, which could result in significant savings from the outrageous estimated bills they currently receive.

The NUJ has also called upon JED management to ensure that trained personnel with good human relations skills are engaged to provide effective services to customers. NNL
