By Princess Simon (Bureau Chief North Central, in Minna)

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger state chapter has commended the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago for approving the re-introduction of Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) in public schools across the state.

Governor Bago while receiving a delegation from the Christian community led by the state CAN Executives and the Deputy Speaker, Niger State House of Assembly (NSHA), Hon (Mrs) Afiniki Dauda at the Government House in Minna, had said it has become necessary to seek divine interventions by turning to God and His teachings on how to rebuild the desired family values for a better family, society and the entire Nigeria generally.

Chairman of the CAN, Niger state, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, according to statement signed by his Mefia Aide, Dan Atori, described Governor Bago as a man who meant well for the generality of the people irrespective of religious, tribal or political differences but is often misunderstood.

Exposing school children early enough to CRK would help the future generations to build up their faith and grow with the fear of God, that, “CRK will be made compulsory for Christian students in all public schools across the state".

Governor Bago lamented that family values/norms and morality have been replaced with negative social vices that most present generation have now adopted as norms resulting in moral decadence hence the need to check the trend by the re-introduction of CRK.

Yohanna who is also the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese in his commendation said, “The Governor’s approval for the re-introduction of CRK in public schools will bring about understanding and mutual respect for the faith by both Christians and non-Christians.

“I commend the leadership style of Governor Bago. He has not only demonstrated his understanding and knowledge of the heterogeneity of Niger state but is committed to fairness and all inclusivity to foster peace and unity amongst all".

The Clergy man maintained that understanding and recognizing their existence and contributions to the state, will foster unity and also build harmonious society among the diverse ethnic groups and religious inclinations in Niger state”.

He however added that, for the actualization of desired results, concerted efforts by the state government, parents, religious leaders and other relevant stakeholders is needed to ensure the future of the Nigerian youths is safeguarded. NNL.
