The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all the chairmanship seats in last Saturday's Local Government Council (LGC) election in Niger state, while opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP clinched 3 out of 274 Councilorship seats.

Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), in a statement by the Commissioner 1 in charge of Operations, Barr Mohammed A. Liman, said the election which took place across the 25 LGCs on Saturday, November 1, 2025, was successful.

According to the statement, "Local government election that took place on Saturday November, 2025 was free, fair, and peaceful, with the APC clinching 271 out of 274 Wards, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) 3 Councillorship seats—two in Tafa and one in Rafi LGC".

Mohammed also hinted that all Returning Officers (ROs) had completed collation and declaration of results in compliance with electoral laws and operational guidelines.

Consequently, Mohammed said the Commission has also ratified the results and would soon issue Certificates of Return to all the elected candidates.

Meanwhile, our correspondent reports that there were widespread electoral malpractices, including ballot boxes snatching, vote buying, destruction of electoral materials, voters apathy, late arrival or completely no supply of voting/electoral materials in some areas.

In some polling units within Suleja town, electoral officers were seen idling away time, while voters were purportedly tear-gassed in some polling units by the police in the area.

Crisis also broke out in some parts of Bida town, zone A over allegations that Governor Mohammed Umar Bago was discriminatorily sharing money which prompted attacks and pelting of stones and pure water sachets on his convoy.

Also, despite restriction of movements, our correspondent reports that most people went about their businesses on the election day, yet the results from NSIEC still reflect that millions of people voted during the election opposition parties said is characterized by high level of electoral flaws.
