As Muslims all over the world commenced fasting in the holy month of Ramadan, prices of perishable items in Bauchi markets have continued to hit the sky.day by day.

A market survey by NIGERIAN NEWSLEADER Newspaper Correspondent who went around some major markets in the Bauchi metropolis, reports that the demands and prices of most of the perishable items are on a high since the beginning of the Ramadan fasting a few days ago.

A seller of perishable mango and orange, Mallam Sulaiman Umar, popularly known as Ali Nuhu, said a bag of oranges was sold before the fasting at N8,500, but now, it is being sold between N13,500 and N14,000.

While one piece of grade (1) Mango was sold between N250 to N300, the small ones is being sold for between N180 to N170 respectively.

Another seller, Malam Sani Dan Ali, said a bag of bananas was sold at N700 before but now, it is being sold for between N900 and N1000 each. He added that 1000 pieces of watermelon (grade one) were sold at N60,000 and now N70,000 while (grade two) sells for beteeen N35,000 and N45,000. And a basket of cashew is sold at N7,000 and pieces of it are sold for between N20, N50 and N70 naira respectively.

A single pear of Pineapple is sold for N1,500 before but now, it is being sold for between N2,000 and N1,750 respectively.

When NEWSLEADER Newspaper Correspondent interviewed some of the customers, they expressed concerns over the increase. They, however, attributed the high prices of the perishable items this period to the Ramadan festivity. NNL.
