The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has called for stronger institutional frameworks and coordinated responses to combat sexual violence against children across Nigeria.

Speaking at a one-day stakeholder roundtable on child rights held in Gombe State, the Chief of UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, Dr Nuzhat Rafique, emphasised the need for urgent action to protect children and ensure access to critical support services.

Dr Rafique said the rising cases of child abuse in Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe states require improved reporting systems, effective coordination, and timely intervention to safeguard survivors.

She noted that children who survive early life challenges must be protected from harmful practices, including sexual abuse, to guarantee proper development.

The UNICEF official stressed that access to integrated services—such as medical care, psychosocial support, and legal assistance—is essential to delivering justice and healing for victims.

Also speaking, Child Protection Information Management System (CPIMS) Officer, Ladi Alabi, highlighted the importance of the One Stop Centre (OSC) model, which provides comprehensive, survivor-centred services in a single location.

Participants at the roundtable advocated for a more responsive and child-centred justice system, describing it as key to addressing abuse cases effectively.

They also called for strengthened referral pathways among institutions to ensure a coordinated and compassionate response.

The forum further urged the media to uphold ethical reporting standards, particularly in protecting survivors’ identities and dignity. Our correspondent reports that the event attracted about 70 journalists from Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe states. NNL.
