As Nigeria celebrates her 60th Independence anniversary, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), has urged Nigerians to re-dedicate themselves to the service of the nation in other to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of our founding fathers.
CUPP said these lofty dreams of a "great, united, prosperous and equitable democratic nation" has been a mirage in the past 60 years of Nigeria which it said has been "ravaged and devastated by inept leadership, corruption, tribalism, militancy, insurgency, kidnapping and armed robbery."
The CUPP made these observations in a statement on Wednesday by the Chairman of its Contact and Mobilization Committee, Rev. Olusegun Peters. The group stated that the nation is in dire need of collective prayers and efforts of all patriotic Nigerians to rescue it from the cabal that has held the populace hostage in the past 60 years of independence.
"As the torch bearer of Nigeria’s democracy, the Coalition of United Political Parties is strongly determined to liberate the masses that have been impoverished, and redirect the ship of the Nigeria State to the path of rectitude, development, progress and advancement.
"For 60 years, Nigerians have been groping in the dark with failed expectations and dashed hopes of a united, prosperous and just society. The common man is over taxed and bears the heavy burden of inept leadership. Instead of providing palliatives to assuage the pains of months of COVID-19 national lockdown as obtainable in other countries, the APC-led Federal Government imposes stamp duties, increase pump price of fuel and hike electricity rate leading to spiral inflation.
"Nigerian lives no longer seem to matter, the people desire and deserve good governance with dividends of democracy, and not carnage", the statement said.
CUPP however urged INEC to obey the judgement of the Court of Appeal which restated that the political parties were wrongly de-registered on the 6th of February 2020, bearing in mind that there is no stay of execution to this landmark ruling of the appellate court that has deepened our frail democracy. "The political space should be widened not restricted", it added.
CUPP commends Nigerians for their resilience and enterprising spirit in the face of "political upheavals and economic stagnation. Nigerians should hold their elected leaders accountable and ensure that they do the right thing all the time, while resisting tranny and obnoxious policies and actions that impede our fragile democracy.
"The success of the recent Edo State governorship election shows that Nigerians are ready to take back power as sovereignty resides in the people. It is a breath of fresh air in the nation's suffocating democratic horizon. It is democracy at its finest. No doubt the Ondo State electorate will come out en masse and vote for candidates of their choice and protect their votes. Together we shall build a strong, virile, progressive democratic nation.
"It is time to move forward with the people. It is time to harness our abundant human and natural resources and build a decent, equitable and prosperous nation, that will not only be the great arsenal of democracy in Africa but also a key player in world politics.
"The 60th Independence of Nigeria provides the opportunity for the citizenry to reform and transform our great nation and build the Nigeria of our dream, which future generation will be proud of", the statement said. NNL.
