Following his apparent souring popularity above his competitors ahead of the 2023 Presidential election, an umbrella Igbo Youth Organization, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), has warned that Nigeria will not know peace if the alleged plot to assassinate the Labour Party Presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, is real.
The angry youths were reacting to the allegations made at the weekend, that some unnamed terrorist jihadists groups are perfecting plans to assassinate Mr Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra state who is currently the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
It is strongly believed in several quarters that Mr Obi's rising popularity among the Nigerian voters might work in his favour at the polls to enable him emerge as the next president of Nigeria, in 2023.
President-General of the youth coalition, Goodluck Ibem, in a statement on Saturday, alleged that some terrorists had told their kidnapped victims who were freed recently that they had concluded plans to assassinate Obi for his decision to run for the presidency in 2023, saying Obi was a threat to the candidate of their choice, going by his growing acceptance by a majority of the registered voters across the various geo-political divide of Nigeria.
In response to the alleged threat to Peter Obi's life, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), said that Mr Obi, like every qualified bonafide citizen of Nigeria, reserves the constitutional right to vie for any political office of his choice.
The group also stated that any attempt to tamper with Peter Obi's life by any individual or group, will definitely provoke a bloody warfare in the country which will lead to an associated catastrophe that might cause the sudden break-up of the country.
The youths warned that, “Nobody should think that he or she has a monopoly of violence. That we are peaceful does not mean that we are weak or senseless. Mr Peter Obi, as a bonafide citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and born in Nigeria, has the constitutional right to contest for any political office he deems fit and nobody can stop that.
“Anyone who thinks he wants to attack Peter Obi is sick, and the sickness will be treated appropriately at the right time. Only a wicked and idiotic person will be comfortable with the current state of the nation. Our country is in dire need of a drastic change that will turn things for good, and some people are plotting to make matters worse because of their selfish agenda.
“We want these criminals to know that even a mad man is owned by some people and if you touch him, thinking that as a mad man roaming on the street, he has nobody, his real owners will come out to defend him.
"We call on the security agencies to immensely move into action and arrest the real criminals plotting to assassinate Mr Peter Obi, just because he is contesting for the office of the President, which he is eminently qualified to do. Enough said!”, the group further warned. NNL.
