- * Says Nobody Will Foist A Running Mate On Him
By Desmond Ukandu (Politics Editor)
Flagbearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 Presidential election, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has allayed fears of Nigerians that he would go for a muslim-muslim ticket in his choice of a presidential running mate
Tinubu why spoke on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at the APC rally in Ekiti State, however, revealed that though there were strong pressure on him to choose his vice from among the muslim politicians of the party from the north, he will not do so, as he and his Campaign team and the his party APC, are looking in the direction of a Christian candidate, and specifically, from the North-East geo-political zone of the country where his main opposition challenger, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), comes from.
Although, Tinubu did not specify whether his running mate would be a man or a woman, there is strong indication that the Jagaban of Borgu and the Asiwaju of Lagos, is considering Senator Binta Masi Garba, a former northern female lawmaker of the red chamber of the National Assembly who is of the Christian faith, and who is said to be a very close friend of his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
Despite this development, there have been speculations in the media in the past few days that Tinubu, a muslim and a former governor of Lagos State, and also a third republic Senator, is weighing the option of settling for a fellow muslim, especially among some APC governors and popular female politicians from the North-West or North-East geo-political zones as his running mate. A similar arrangement adopted by the late icon of democracy, Bashorun Moshood Abiola, when he picked a fellow muslim, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, as his running mate in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) of the third republic that won the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election.
However, speculations on where Tinubu's presidential running mate will come from and who indeed he or she might be, have dominated public and party discussions, and even in worship centers across the country since he won the primary of the APC last week Wednesday.
The APC candidate stated at the Ekiti governorship rally, that the speculation that he is going for a muslim-muslim ticket in the choice of his vice presidential candidate, was the handiwork of his political opponents, who, he said, were mortally afraid that he would defeat them at the poll.
Tinubu explained that contrary to such speculation, his presidential running mate shall be a Christian and from the North-East geo-political zone. He maintains that no organization, institution or individual could compel him to pick a running mate he does not want.
The Asiwaju stated: “The VP slot belongs to the Northeastern region and particularly the Christians, but consultations are yet ongoing as to who will be decided". NNL.
