The Bauchi State Government has evacuated 64 students of Bauchi origin from the University of Jos (UNIJOS) following a violent crisis in Anguwan Rukuba that reportedly claimed 27 lives. The students arrived safely at the Government House, Bauchi, in the early hours of Friday.

President of the National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS), UNIJOS Chapter, Comrade James Timothy, commended the government for its swift intervention, describing it as unprecedented in the institution’s history.

Timothy, who spoke shortly after arrival, said the prompt action by Governor Bala Mohammed and the Commissioner for Higher Education and Regional Integration, Hajia Hadiza Abdulkadir Kango, prevented further trauma among affected students.

He explained that the intervention followed a distress call escalated through the NUBASS National President, Comrade Mohammed Suleiman Abdulwahab.

“In the history of UNIJOS, we have not witnessed this kind of intervention,” he said, recalling a similar crisis in 2021 when no evacuation support was provided.

Also speaking, Kango said the government immediately mobilised resources upon receiving the alert, deploying security agencies and transportation to ensure safe evacuation.

“All 64 students arrived safely and are being reunited with their families,” she said.

She added that the operation underscores the administration’s commitment to the safety and welfare of Bauchi indigenes.

The evacuation followed renewed violence in parts of Jos, with authorities working to restore calm in affected communities. NNL.
