No fewer than 70 journalists from the North-East and North-Central zones have been trained on ethical reporting of children by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The two-day workshop, organised in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, was held in Gombe State.

Speaking at the event, UNICEF Country Representative, Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef, emphasised the need for responsible reporting to protect children, especially those affected by conflict and other crises.

Represented by UNICEF Communication Specialist, Susan Akila, she urged journalists to avoid publishing information that could expose children’s identities or put them at risk.

She noted that ethical journalism requires empathy and a strong sense of responsibility in handling child-related stories.

Also speaking, the Assistant Director of the Child Rights Information Bureau (CRIB), Toye Falayi, said the training was designed to equip journalists with the knowledge needed to report child rights issues in line with global best practices.

The workshop also featured sessions on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), the domestication of the Child Rights Act (CRA 2003), and challenges affecting child protection in Nigeria. NNL.
