As part of preparations for the take off of the new Sokoto city, the state Government had commenced the construction of a multi billion naira sports Arena in Kasarawa village, a suburb of the state capital where the proposed new city is to be established.
The sports Arena which has a 5000 seating capacity and 10,000 seating convertible canopies, was awarded for contract at N1.7 billion naira to Messrs Q 5 Nigeria limited.
The project which is schedule to be completed in 12 months has already reached appreciable level of progress with virtually all needed construction material made available by the contractor.
According to the project manager, Arch. Usuman Banye, when completed the edifice would be a pride to the state when it come hosting national and international sports fiester.
The project which is of Olympic size is designed to accommodate both indoor and outdoor sporting events with fullfledged facilities.
Banye further maintained that the Arena when completed would increased the internally generated revenue of the state and locals who sell various drinks and food to spectators and visiting clubs.
In his remarks during the inspection tour of the facility, the chairman of the Nigeria Union of journalists, Isa Abubakar Shuni, expressed delight with what he saw at the site.
He said the contractor has proven to the people and sokoto state government that he is capable of delivering the new sports Arena on the appointed time.
He said he is optimistic that the proposed new Sokoto city would come to reality with the siting of the new sporting facility.
The NUJ chairman commended the foresight of Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal for nursing the idea of establishing a new sokoto city, adding that it would pave ways for development of the state capital.
He however appealed to the contractor to keep up with the good work he had started, saying that the contractor is using standard equipment and construction materials. NNL.
