The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to make the preliminary Register of Voters for the 2027 general election available online, following concerns expressed by Nigerians and other stakeholders over the need for wider public access to the document.

The Commission said the register, which was physically displayed at Registration Areas nationwide from October 9 to 15, 2026, would now be accessible through its online platform, providing registered voters with an additional opportunity to inspect their particulars and identify possible errors or irregularities.

In a statement on Monday, October 26, 2026, by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of INEC's Information and Voter Education Committee, the Commission said the decision was taken in furtherance of its commitment to transparency, accessibility and public confidence in the electoral process.

According to INEC, the online publication will complement the physical display already conducted and make the preliminary register accessible to a wider section of the population.

The register can be accessed through the Commission's dedicated online platform at https://display.inecnigeria.org.

The development follows calls by Nigerians and electoral stakeholders for the Commission to provide online access to the register, allowing citizens to scrutinise the document beyond the period of physical display at designated Registration Areas.

INEC explained that the physical display was conducted in accordance with Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026, which provides for the display of the preliminary register to enable registered voters to examine their details and submit claims and objections as prescribed by law.

The Commission, however, emphasised that the process of handling claims and objections arising from the exercise was still ongoing.

It said the submissions would be processed in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2026, ahead of the certification and publication of the Final Register of Voters scheduled for December 15, 2026.

The voters' register is a critical component of the electoral process because it establishes the list of eligible registered voters and provides the basis for determining who can participate in an election.

Errors, omissions or questionable entries in the register can generate concerns about the integrity of an election. Consequently, the opportunity for citizens to scrutinise their particulars and draw attention to suspected irregularities is an important aspect of electoral transparency.

INEC's decision to provide online access is expected to widen the opportunity for public scrutiny, particularly for registered voters who may find it difficult to revisit Registration Areas where the physical display took place.

Nevertheless, the effectiveness of the initiative will depend partly on public awareness, the accessibility of the online platform and the Commission's ability to address legitimate complaints within the stipulated legal framework.

The Commission called for continued public interest and constructive engagement by Nigerians and other stakeholders, reiterating its commitment to transparency, accountability and the faithful implementation of the Electoral Act, 2026.

With the final register scheduled for publication on December 15, the ongoing exercise represents an important stage in preparations for the 2027 general election.

INEC's latest move places additional responsibility on registered voters and electoral stakeholders to examine the available information carefully and draw attention to any discrepancies through the appropriate procedures.

The Commission maintained that the exercise was part of its broader commitment to delivering credible elections in Nigeria. NNL.
