A new report reveals a powerful and surprising global trend: the world's most generous nations are not the wealthiest. Instead, nations across Africa and Asia are leading the way in charitable giving.

According to the Charities Aid Foundation's (CAF) World Giving Report 2026, which surveyed over 60,000 people across 105 countries, a country's generosity is not determined by its GDP . The data shows that when it comes to donating a share of their income, poorer nations are outshining the world's economic powerhouses .

The Top Ten Most Generous Countries

The CAF report reveals a ranking dominated by Africa and Asia. Here are the top ten countries based on the percentage of individual income donated :

  1. Nigeria (2.8% of income)
  2. Egypt (2.45%)
  3. Ghana & China (2.19% - tied)
  4. Kenya (2.13%)
  5. Uganda (2.04%)
  6. United Arab Emirates, Qatar, & India (1.92% - tied)
  7. Pakistan also ranked highly, with 83% of the population donating an average of 1.9% of their income

What is Driving This Generosity?

The report highlights that the reasons for giving are deeply rooted in community and faith. Religious initiatives remain the primary cause for donations globally (31%), closely followed by support for children and poverty alleviation .

Furthermore, the survey found a growing sense of collective duty, with 48% of respondents saying they give because it is a communal responsibility—a significant rise from 39% in 2025 .

A Stark Continental Divide

The CAF report exposes a significant divide in global giving habits:

· Africa: Leads the world in generosity, with citizens donating an average of 1.6% of their income. Nigeria topped the list with a remarkable 2.8% .
· Europe: Recorded the lowest percentage globally, with an average donation rate of just 0.6% of income .

A Different Kind of Generosity

While the CAF report focuses on financial donations, a separate study by financial services provider Remitly measured generosity as a broader social behaviour. Using the Interpersonal Generosity Scale to assess kindness, empathy, and emotional support, the study placed South Africa at number one, followed by the Philippines and the United States .

The top ten for "everyday generosity":

  1. South Africa (51.57)
  2. Philippines (50.2)
  3. United States (49.23)
  4. Ireland (48.4)
  5. Canada (48.03)
  6. Portugal (47.75)
  7. Greece (47.62)
  8. United Kingdom (47.53)
  9. Australia (47.43)
  10. Mexico (47.29)

It is worth noting that Indonesia, which has held the top spot in previous years for other metrics of giving, also ranks as a world leader in generosity, with 90% of its citizens donating money and 65% volunteering their time .

These findings paint a clear picture: generosity is a universal human value, but it is most powerfully expressed in the nations where community, faith, and a collective sense of duty are most deeply felt.
