The alleged assault on a journalist in Bauchi State has sparked renewed concerns over press freedom and the safety of media professionals in Nigeria.

The International Press Centre (IPC), through its Safety and Protection of Journalists (SPJ) Hub, condemned the incident involving Mohammed Adamu, a reporter with Albarka Radio, who was attacked while covering Eid Durbar celebrations in Bununu.

According to the journalist, he was stopped by a police officer and later beaten on the orders of the Divisional Police Officer, Jamilu Kabir, despite identifying himself.

IPC Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, described the incident as a dangerous abuse of power and a violation of fundamental human rights.

He warned that such actions could create a hostile environment for journalists and undermine democratic values.

The organisation called on the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, to ensure justice and prevent a recurrence.

IPC also urged the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen training and promote professionalism among its personnel. NNL.
