A group under the auspices of ICON Associate began a three day training in Sokoto State, on Thursday, for the Nigerian Police on psychological development, human rights, rights of the police as well as conflict management.

Flagging off the training at the Giginya Hotels Sokoto, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman, represented by the Assistant Inspector General, Zone 10, Bello Dalijan, said the training sponsored by the Nigeria Police Trust fund (NPTF) couldn't have come at a better time than now.

The IGP who affirmed that the goal, is, amongst other things, part of the on-going process of reforming the Nigeria police in ensuring good service delivery through enhanced capacity building, respect for rule of law and human right in the face of current prevailing security challenges in the country.

"The psychological development and conflict management aspect is very key in improving the positive mindset of our policemen in contact with the members of the public. This will create an avenue for our officers to exhibit high sense of tolerance and professionalism in decision making, while engaging with the public to effectively nip in the bud, civil unrest and other disruptive tendencies which borders on misconduct and other social vices".

While tasking participating officers from Kebbi, Zamfara and Sokoto States to endeavor to pass the training across to other officers and put into practice those things learnt in their day to days activities, the IGP assured Nigerians of the continued commitment of the Police to peace and security for all.

Speaking earlier, the convener and MD of ICON Associate, Mrs Christie Dagogo George, said the training became necessary in view of the security challenges in the country and it's adverse effects on the Nigeria police force and other security agencies.

Mrs Dagogo stressed that the three day training will improved the psychological stability, aid their conflict management prowess, help them to re-undertand the rights of citizens as stipulated in chapter four and section 33 of the 1999 constitution.

Continuing, Mrs Dagogo said, "Finally, the training will technically deploy demonstration of technology for surveillance monitoring; it will observe and understand the classes of explosives and detonation of same".

On his part, the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Police Command, CP Muhammed Usiani Gumel, appealed to participating personnel to concentrate, adding that the job of ensuring that Nigeria is secured and safe for all is a task that must be achieved against all odds. NNL.
