A front-line Nigerian civil society group, Justice Now Coalition, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria, to consider giving effect to the judgment of the Federal High Court that reinstated Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Araraume as non-executive chairman of the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), instead of heading to the Court of Appeal to challenge the judgment, and prompting faceless civil society groups to be demeaning the temple of justice and the rule of law on account of the court judgment.

On Monday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed 45 out of 48 Ministers, with just three more to complete his bloated cabinet. Hours before their inauguration, some Ministers-designate swapped offices. Should we call that cabinet reshuffle or what? Or is it another sign of the ill-preparedness of the president to govern, as some critics have suggested? While it is damn too early to categorically affirm such a thing, the morning, as they say, shows the day. So, the president must watch it. He needs to put his acts together. Too many unforced errors make even the best of tennis players lose a match.

Now that the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), has signed the Electoral Bill into law, it remains to be seen whether the new law will be the cure-all solution to the country’s electoral or election problems. But for intense public pressure, Buhari would most likely not have signed for the umpteenth time. What this shows is that Frederick Douglass is right when he posited that the people must fight for whatever freedom or rights they desire from their rulers.
